Generales
CG 2 - Adquirir conocimiento de las diferentes disciplinas del campo de la lengua inglesa
CB1 - Que los estudiantes hayan demostrado poseer y comprender conocimientos en un área de estudio que parte de la base de la educación secundaria general, y se suele encontrar a un nivel que, si bien se apoya en libros de texto avanzados, incluye también algunos aspectos que implican conocimientos procedentes de la vanguardia de su campo de estudio
CB4 - Que los estudiantes puedan transmitir información, ideas, problemas y soluciones a un público tanto especializado como no especializado

CE 9 - Analizar la lengua inglesa desde el conocimiento de sus distintos periodos, su sintaxis, su semántica, los estudios de lingüística aplicada, y el análisis del discurso, así como la pragmática de la lengua inglesa.

CE 9 - Analyse the English language from the knowledge of its different periods, its syntax, its semantics, studies of applied linguistics, and discourse analysis, as well as the pragmatics of the English language.

Activities based on class work. These imply the analysis and contextualization of texts from different stages in the evolution of the language.

Búsqueda, análisis y discusión de textos sobre diferentes temas relacionados con la evolución socio-cultural y lingüística de la lengua inglesa por parte del estudiantado.

General overview of the evolution of the English language from its origins up to nowadays

Objetivos

El objetivo fundamental del curso es proporcionar al estudiante una visión general de la evolución de la lengua inglesa desde sus orígenes hasta la época contemporánea.

The essential goal of the course is to provide the student with a general overview of the evolution of the English language from its origins up to nowadays

Contenido

El curso se centrará en la identificación de los periodos de la lengua inglesa habitualmente reconocidos y proporcionará una justificación para los mismos, tanto interna (cambios y características principales) como externa (contexto histórico-cultural en el que se desarrollan), atendiendo solamente a los cambios más significativos. 

1. Conceptos fundamentales de la lingüística histórico-comparada y del cambio lingüístico. 

2. El inglés entre las lenguas germánicas. 

3. Orígenes de la lengua inglesa. Emigración de grupos germánicos a Inglaterra. 

4. El inglés antiguo. Cultura y lengua 

5. El inglés medio. Situaciones diglósicas y caracterización lingüística 

6. El inglés moderno temprano. Debates metalingüísticos y caracterización lingüística 

7. El inglés moderno tardío: Codificación y expansión del inglés. 

8. El inglés contemporáneo. Siglo XX y nuevas perspectivas de cambio. 


CONTENTS 

The course will be focused on the identification of the different stages of the English language generally acknowledged and on providing an internal (changes and main features) and an external (historical and cultural context) justification for those periods just based on the most significant changes. 

1. Fundamental concepts of comparative historical linguistics and language change. 

2. English among the Germanic languages. 

3. Origins of the English language: Migration of Germanic groups to England. 

4. Old English: Language and culture. 

5. Middle English: diglossia and linguistic features.

6. Modern English: metalinguistic debates and linguistic features. 

7. Late Modern English: codification and expansion. 

8. Contemporary English: 20th century and new perspective of change.

Evaluación

La evaluación se llevará a cabo de forma continua. Los elementos que se tendrán en cuenta para la nota final son: realización de pruebas específicas; la asistencia a las lecciones magistrales y a las tutorías; la realización de las actividades prácticas de naturaleza y extensión diversa relativos a los contenidos del curso y la corrección y eficacia con que éstas se llevan a cabo y las presentaciones en clase. Las notas se
repartirán distribuidas dentro de la siguiente horquilla:
Examen/Ejercicio teórico y práctico 50-70 %
Trabajos prácticos/proyectos individuales o en grupo tutelados 20-30 %
Asistencia y participación activa en clase 5-20%

Assessment
The assessment will be continuous. Elements to be taken into account for final grade: Accomplishment of specific tasks; the attendance to classes and tutoring hours; the fulfilment of practical tasks of diverse extension and nature related to the contents of the subject and the correction and efficacy of their fulfilment of those tasks and/or the class presentations. The range of the final grade will be distributed as follows:
Theoretical/Practical test: 50-70%
Individual/Group work tasks/projects: 20-30%
Attendance and active participation in class: 5-20%
